Irving Funds New England Aquarium’s Right Whale Research

Irving Oil has announced they will renew sponsorship of the New England Aquarium’s Right Whale Research Team. Irving Oil will provide funds for the aquarium to track endangered Right Whales in their summer feeding grounds in the Bay of Fundy. This will be an extension of a previous funding deal signed in 1998.

“Ship strikes (collisions with ships) and entanglements are the most significant cause of Right Whale mortality. New energy projects including a proposed second Irving Oil Refinery and the Irving/Repsol LNG terminal will dramatically increase the amount of ship traffic in the Bay of Fundy” and the risk of ship strikes to the Right Whale population, says Fundy Baykeeper.

Furthermore, many people are becoming concerned as large industrial interests intent on moving projects ahead, begin directly funding groups to carry out research work and publish information.

Environment Minister, Roland Haché, Turns Down Bayside Quarry Expansion

Environment Minister, Roland Haché, has turned down Jamer Materials' application for a rezoning and expansion of the Bayside Quarry. Jamer had applied to expand the quarry into scenic hillsides overlooking the St. Croix Estuary and adjacent the Chamcook Lake watershed which supplies the town of St. Andrews with its drinking water. The existing quarry operation has caused distress to nearby residents in the community of Bayside from noise, dust and blasting while degrading the natural environment and beauty along the St. Croix Estuary. In making this decision, Minister Haché said the risks of the proposed quarry expansion outweighed the benefits and it was necessary to protect the water supply for the town of St. Andrews.

Minister Haché also announced the acceptance of a new Rural Plan developed by the Bayside Local Service District Advisory Committee which prohibits the establishment of any new pits or quarries in the Bayside Local Service District.

Fundy Baykeeper congratulates Environment Minister Haché for his wise and prudent decision to turn down the quarry expansion and to adopt a Rural Plan to preserve the natural environment and water quality in the long term.

Bayside Quarry Expansion Threatens Environment

A rock quarry project on the shoreline of the St. Croix Estuary at Bayside N.B. was started in 1998 to create a cargo laydown area for an adjacent port operation. However, this small quarrying project took on a life of its own, expanding into a large quarrying and crushing operation exporting aggregate to the U.S.A.

The operation has caused a host of environmental problems including runoff, siltation, dust, noise, habitat removal and an ugly scar on the shoreline visible from three nearby nature preserves. The operation also threatens local water supplies.

The quarry operator, Jamer Materials, is now seeking Government approval to expand the operation further along the shoreline and into adjacent scenic hillsides which currently host a series of nature trails. The ugly scar of the Bayside Quarry is clearly visible from the Ganong Nature Park, Devil’s Head Nature Preservation Area, Simpson Hill and the adjacent St. Croix Island International Historic Site. The proposed expansion is also a threat to the water supply for the nearby Town of St. Andrews.

Fundy Baykeeper is working with the Bayside community Local Service District, the Town of St. Andrews and several other organizations to oppose any expansion or life extension of this quarry. Jamer Materials has applied to the Province of New Brunswick to amend the Bayside Local Service District planning statement to accommodate an expansion of their quarry operation.

We cannot allow this quarry expansion to move forward.

We encourage everyone concerned over the future health and well-being of the natural environment and the communities along the St. Croix Estuary to contact Hon. Roland Hache, New Brunswick Minister of Environment. Express your concerns and tell him you are opposed to any expansion of the Bayside Quarry and any further extension of its operating life.
